SPG Blocks
At Institute for TMJ, Headache & Sleep, we offer non-opioid, minimally invasive treatment options for selected patients experiencing headaches and migraines.
One treatment that may be considered is a Sphenopalatine Ganglion (SPG) Block using the TX360® delivery system.
What Is an SPG Block?
The Sphenopalatine Ganglion (SPG) is a group of nerves located deep within the nasal cavity that is involved in the pathways associated with headaches and migraines.
With the TX360® system, medication is delivered through a small, flexible catheter placed gently into the nasal passage. The procedure typically takes only a few minutes and does not require needles to be placed in the face or head.
The goal of an SPG Block is to temporarily calm nerve pathways involved in headache pain, potentially reducing the intensity, frequency, or duration of headaches.
Who May Benefit?
SPG Block therapy may be considered for patients experiencing:
Chronic migraine
Episodic migraine
Status migrainosus
Cluster headache
Certain post-traumatic headaches
Hemicrania continua
Paroxysmal hemicrania
SPG Block therapy is not appropriate for everyone. A comprehensive evaluation is performed to determine whether this treatment may be a suitable option based on your symptoms, medical history, and individual needs.
Why Consider an SPG Block?
For appropriately selected patients, potential benefits may include:
Minimally invasive, office-based treatment
No sedation required
No facial or head injections
Can be used alongside other headache and migraine treatments
May help reduce headache intensity or frequency
May provide an option for patients who have not achieved adequate relief with traditional therapies
