Orthotics

An orthotic, sometimes called a splint, is a customized device worn in the mouth to help manage conditions such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, sleep apnea, bruxism, and other facial pain conditions.

As a noninvasive treatment option, oral appliances can help reduce pain, improve jaw function, support better sleep quality, and relieve associated symptoms. Depending on the condition being treated, an appliance may be designed to reposition or support the jaw, protect the teeth, or help maintain a more open airway during sleep.

Our team evaluates each patient individually to determine whether an oral appliance is an appropriate treatment option and, when indicated, develops a customized appliance based on the patient's specific needs.

How Do They Work?

Oral appliances are designed to address specific patient needs. Depending on the condition being treated, an appliance may reposition the jaw, reduce stress on the temporomandibular joints, stabilize the bite, protect the teeth, or help keep the airway open during sleep.

Oral appliances are often used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan and may be combined with physical therapy, medication, behavioral or lifestyle modifications, or other appropriate interventions.

Because each appliance is customized to the individual, it is designed for a comfortable, precise fit and to address the patient's specific condition and treatment goals. With appropriate guidance and follow-up, patients can incorporate their appliances into their daily or nighttime routines and use them as prescribed to support successful treatment outcomes.

Types of Appliances

The type of oral appliance recommended depends on the condition being treated, the patient's symptoms, and their individual treatment needs. During an evaluation, our team will determine which appliance is most appropriate and develop a personalized treatment plan.

Our Approach

Success in using an oral device depends on having the right appliance and consistent use. Our doctors will work with you to review the benefits and risks of each option so we can create the right device for your specific needs.

Institute for TMJ, Headache & Sleep providers are board certified in Orofacial Pain treatment and have extensive experience using oral devices to treat TMJ disorder, bruxism, and sleep apnea.  As part of our collaborative, evidence-based approach, our programs often incorporate other therapies such as medications, therapeutic injections, and lifestyle recommendations. Because many orofacial conditions can coexist, influencing and exacerbating each other, we provide a comprehensive approach that can lead to a more successful recovery.
